Location: Edmonton, AB, Saskatoon, SK, Winnipeg, MB, or Morden, MB (flexible hybrid)
DL Seeds is seeking a highly motivated individual to lead pea and fababean breeding activities in North America and develop high performing varieties suited to producers in key pulse growing regions.
Core responsibilities:
? Create and develop pea and fababean germplasm leading to the delivery of high performing commercial varieties.
? Develop and implement breeding strategies to meet distribution partners? needs, drive genetic gains and advance the pipeline of commercially relevant varieties including evaluation of new germplasm, marker assisted selection, genomic selection, or other relevant technologies.
? Manage and lead the day-to-day activities of breeding, nursery, and Pre-Breeder seed production programs in North American and contra seasons in Chile/New Zealand.
? Evaluate breeding lines in trial locations across Western Canada and USA.
? Coordinate and plan in conjunction with DL Seeds? Agronomy team to set-up and execute agronomic field trial program.
? Coordinate and plan activities with DL Seeds? international pulse breeding partners.
? Evaluate and analyze data from all field scale trials to provide recommendations for advancement to the Commercial Product Manager for all pre-commercial pulse varieties.
? Lead Plant Breeders? Rights (PBR) and Plant Variety Protection (PVP) applications.
? Support Commercial Product Manager with customer field tours, meetings, and events in Western Canada and USA.
? Interact with distribution partners, breeding partners, external stakeholders to represent DL Seeds, provide technical information, seek input for future strategy development, and to adjust research activities to align with customers? current and future needs.
? Work closely with the Commercial Product Manager to budget and forecast for Pulse Breeding Program.
? Lead all Pulse Breeding related industry research projects.
Requirements:
? PhD degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics or closely related field, or Master?s Degree with a minimum of five years experience in a breeding program.
? Hands-on experience working in a pulse or small grains breeding program will be considered an asset.
? CSGA recognized plant breeder status will be considered an asset.
? Knowledge of statistical analysis and experimental field research design principles and software.
? Possess strong leadership skills and effective team empowerment qualities.
? Strong verbal and written English skills.
? Proficiency is MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
? Ability to develop and maintain professional and collaborative relationships with all departments, as well as with industry partners and customers.
? Must be a resident of Canada.
? Must have a valid drivers license. There is no public transportation to our research station locations.
? Be willing to travel throughout Canada, USA, Europe, and contra season locations as required.
