The incumbent will teach the Indigenous Injury Prevention Program through the year on a casual basis, in collaboration with the Program Officer, Creating Safe Environments Injury Prevention. This position will include teaching injury prevention programming such as swimming lessons, first aid, fire and fall safety as required at various Indigenous communities or organizations in your region to Indigenous children, youth and adults. Programming runs all year, but full-time hours are achievable April through September. In this role, you will: Responsibility 1 - Teach Injury Prevention programming and provide lifeguarding services to and in Partnership with Indigenous communities and organizations Demonstrates professional conduct in accordance with Red Cross Codes of Conduct. Represents the Canadian Red Cross in a professional and respectful manner. Creates long-term and daily lesson plans. Applies Red Cross Swim Program progressions and the ability to evaluate participant performance. Plans culturally-appropriate activities for the age group, ability level of participants and employs a holistic teaching philosophy. Ensure teaching space is clean and safe for program delivery. Follow all procedures found in the Aquatic Safety Plan. Maintains safety (physical, cultural and emotional) and ensures supervision of participants at all times. Prepare and pack needed supplies for courses and ensure all supplies and equipment are decontaminated, washed or replaced when putting away. Delivery of injury prevention programming under drowning prevention, home fire prevention, fall prevention, and First Aid. Delivery of additional CRC programming as needed. Attend one week of paid professional development, including cultural awareness components, before programming begins (provided by Red Cross). Responsibility 2 - Administration and Reporting Track and submit participants' performance in your swim class. Write mid and end- term Red Cross Swim Program report cards. Track and submit expenses and hours worked using the appropriate resources and tools. Daily documentation and communication to supervisor including safety reports and incident reporting. What we are looking for: A minimum of 1-3 years of job-related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must hold a current LSS Swim for Life Instructor certification or higher. Current Standard First Aid and Lifeguard Qualifications or higher. Experience working with a diverse population and an understanding of Indigenous culture is an asset. Have the ability to travel and stay in remote communities. Valid full/unrestricted driver license is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; fluency in a second language an asset. Some computer skills and experience (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook). Strong customer service, training, problem solving, and interpersonal skills required. Able and willing to work a
