Vancouver Island Regional LibraryHealth and Safety SpecialistWe are looking for a Health and Safety Specialist to join our People & Culture team! As the subject matter expert, the Health & Safety Specialist plays a pivotal role in leading and advancing the organization's occupational health and safety (OHS) programs. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of comprehensive safety initiatives. The specialist serves as a visible leader, providing day-to-day oversight of safety operations across the organization. They offer expert support, guidance, and resources while delivering training programs to promote compliance with occupational health and safety legislation. The incumbent ensures adherence to all applicable regulations, including those under WorkSafe BC, and drives continuous improvement in OHS practices. This includes proactively identifying opportunities to enhance health and safety measures, fostering a culture of safety, and ensuring the organization meets or exceeds regulatory requirements. As the ideal candidate, you are a proactive health and safety specialist with a genuine passion for leveraging OHS process to drive operational excellence. Your career progression will have equipped you with the following experiences and skills: Providing collaborative leadership and expert advice and support to the organization in all areas of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Leading and supporting the development, maintenance, implementation and assessment of safety systems, policies and programs to enhance the culture of safety and ensure compliance with legislation. Ensuring corporate compliance with all OHS program aspects and contributes to and leads as necessary: accident/incident investigation; emergency response; first aid attendant coordination and support; workplace safety compliance; and risk assessments/safety inspections. Providing professional leadership, support and guidance on all matters related to WorkSafeBC, including liaising on claims submissions and management, appeals, and return to work programs. Acting as the investigation coordinator for serious workplace incidents and injuries (including near misses). Preparing the report and recommending appropriate preventative or corrective actions, including corrective discipline. You hold a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety along with 3-5 years? experience in a health and safety role preferably in a unionized environment. An equivalent combination of education such as diploma, certificates, training and experience may be considered. A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation is considered an asset. You are required to have a valid BC Driver?s License and will be required to satisfactorily complete a Criminal Record Check (Working with Children & Vulnerable Adults).Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) acknowledges that it operates on the traditional territories of the 53 First Nations within its service area, who are members of the Coast Salish, Haida, Nuu-chah- nulth, Kwakwaka?wakw and Nuxálk peoples.
