Job details
Dental Hygienists typically work independently and focus on cleaning patients? teeth and keeping their gums healthy by focusing on preventative care, showing patients how to properly care for their teeth and gums. They typically remove plaque and tartar build-up (commonly called ?scale and polish? or prophylaxis). Hygienists typically can build more rapport with patients as Dental Hygienists see patients more often and can give advice to help prevent tooth decay, staining, or other things specific to the patients? oral health.
In general, their roles and responsibilities include:
* Use gloves, mask, and other personal protective equipment with every patient, ensuring proper fit for each, and taking additional measures for known infectious patients to ensure patient and staff health & safety
* Complete clinical charts and ensure that it is accurately documented into dental software
* Ensure patients get COEs every 2-3 years and a recall exam every 6 months
* Advising patients with what exams are required for their next appointment(s) and advising front-end staff of all recommended appointment(s) during patient hand off, assisting with bookings as needed
* Ensure all operations are in compliance with IPAC protocols
* Maintain updated health and safety checklists, updating it as necessary and required
* Sterilizing dental instruments and maintaining the cleanliness, sanitization, and sterilization of various areas including within the operatory and the sanitization/sterilization areas
* Ensure careful use and proper maintenance of equipment, reporting service on faulty equipment
* Understand the day?s operations during the morning huddle and identify areas where you or others in the team may need additional support or assistance (i.e., if additional safety measures need to be taken with an infectious patient and where to situate back to back patients to ensure smooth transitions between patients)
* Stock the operatories with necessary supplies and maintain the inventory
* Chart the treatment plan as the Dentist goes over the details with the patient and ensure accurate information is entered into the patient?s file
* Write a complete description of any procedure performed in the patient?s chart and ensure it is complete before the end of day
* Ensure that all work in the patient?s treatment plan is completed that day
* Review your next working day?s schedule and audit your weekly schedule aiming to reduce/eliminate as much down time as possible
* Other duties as assigned and necessary
Patient Care:
* Take X-rays, photos, and complete other documentation necessary to ensure that the Dentist has all appropriate documentation to provide patients with an effective treatment plan (as needed)
* Teaching and advising patients on the importance of oral hygiene and how to properly complete various oral hygiene tasks (e.g., flossing, brushing teeth)
* Review, reinforce, and explain the importance of treatments that patients need, directing more complicated questions and concerns to the dentist
* Provide post cleaning instructions to patients and ensure transfer of information to front-end staff
Compliance:
* Ensure IPAC, Health and Safety, PHO and other regulatory bodies? compliance
* Ensure relevant certifications are maintained and renewed, prior to expiration (i.e., CDHO and CPR) and a copy is provided to HR for documentation
* Complete ongoing courses and education and remain up-to-date on various procedures and best practices

Expected hours: 35 ? 44 per week
