BC Provincial Outreach Program Deaf & Hard of Hearing - American Sign Language Literacy Specialist Teacher <p>Full Time, Temporary to June 30, 2027 (1.0 FTE) <p> <p>As one of the largest, most progressive and diverse urban districts in the province, Burnaby provides comprehensive educational programs and services to a diverse population of 24,500 full-time and 17,000 part-time learners. The district operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, plus a number of additional facilities. <p> <p>BC Provincial Outreach Program Deaf & Hard of Hearing (POPDHH) has expanded to serve a growing number of children, many with cochlear implants and many using ASL, who live at home and are served by their home school districts, First Nations Programs and Independent Schools.<p> <p>The focus of the Provincial Outreach Program Deaf and Hard of Hearing (POPDHH) is to collaborate with school districts in meeting the needs of all Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners. Through collaborative consultation POPDHH supports educational teams in addressing the unique communication and learning styles of individual Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. To reach every student's potential POPDHH promotes goals of language development, literacy, numeracy, cognitive development, self-advocacy, and self-confidence in becoming responsible, global citizens.<p> <p>The Provincial Outreach Program: Deaf and Hard of Hearing is seeking an American Sign Language Specialist Teacher for the Early Literacy project.<p> <p>Duties and Responsibilities: <p><p> Under the general direction of the Vice-Principal, provides leadership and support POPDHH, providing expertise and services in ASL with a focus on literacy.<p> Participates on committees or meetings as required and offers input matters concerning POPDHH.<p> Works together with a TDHH - Literacy Specialist to create materials in ASL and model visual tactile strategies.<p> Provides oversight of students with documented barriers to accessing curriculum through auditory channels alone and supports their development of expressive and receptive language skills in ASL.<p> Provides services to students in person and through video conferencing with an emphasis on language acquisition using a bilingual approach to language learning.<p> Organizes professional development to build ASL skills and appreciation of bilingual educational approaches in educational teams.<p> Provides support and guidance to Education Assistants, facilitating group immersion or conversation groups and provides resources to support their ongoing skill development.<p> Communicates with educational teams and students in English and American Sign Language, and shares knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture and history.<p> Conducts American Sign Language assessments (receptive and expressive), for students and staff.<p> Collaborates with POPDHH team to create resource videos in ASL for Educational Teams and student use with a focus on literacy.<p> Coordinates the organization of Provincial events such as student initiatives, videoconferences, media and technology services.<p> Collaborates with partner agencies to provide seamless services in the community.<p> Develops and edits blogs of provincial events and initiatives created for the distribution to all school districts and community stakeholders.<p> Maintains the technology services (updating software, checking a variety of materials for accuracy and completeness).<p> Performs related duties as required.<p><p> <p> <p>Required Qualifications: <p><p> Native ASL user (ASLPI: 4+) with a bachelor?s degree in American Sign Language (ASL), ASL Cultural Studies, Curriculum or equivalent courses.<p> Minimum of three (3) years? experience working with children in a K-12 public education environment.<p> Possess or be eligible for a valid BC teaching certificate preferred<p> Holds ASL teaching/instructing experience<p> Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively; experience in the preparation of formal reports, written pre
