The City of Corner Brook is currently accepting applications for the position of *Lifeguard* with the Department of Recreation & Tourism.
Reporting to the Head lifeguard, the lifeguard will be responsible for ensuring that pool and facility rules are enforced, while patrons have a pleasant and safe aquatic experience.
As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment within the zoned pool area by enforcing facility rules, processes, and procedures. Your duties will include remaining on duty until relieved, responding to emergency situations, and educating patrons on safe recreational behavior. You will maintain the required fitness standards and ensure the proper storage and cleanliness of the facility and equipment.
Additionally, you will report all incidents, including accidents and near misses, by completing the appropriate documentation. Continuous professional development is essential, so you will be expected to update your training to maintain competent lifeguarding skills. Providing assistance and guidance to patrons, communicating effectively with colleagues and supervisors, and performing routine maintenance tasks are also key components of this role.
Championing safety is a priority; you will prepare and adhere to site-specific health and safety plans, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety legislation and Public Pools Regulations under the Public Health Act. Fostering a respectful and collaborative working environment, attending scheduled training sessions, and working closely with municipal, provincial, and national organizations will be essential to maintaining compliance with the Department of Health. You will also participate in planning activities across the Recreation Services Department.
The successful applicant must posses current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service Certification, First Aid, CPR and Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification or be willing to obtain the instructor certification within the first six months of employment.
If over 18, provide a current Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Certificate of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check.
The successful applicant must have a demonstrated leadership ability towards working with the public and aquatic supervision. Effective oral and written communication and the ability to manage with tact and diplomacy. Possess sound decision-making skills.
