People like you!This is an assistant supervisory position involving responsibility for the construction and maintenance of a variety of asphalt and/or drainage works. An incumbent assigns, coordinates, schedules, inspects and participates in the work of asphalt rakers, labourers, truck drivers and equipment operators engaged in the construction and maintenance of curbs, commercial and private crossings; or asphalt patching, repair and maintenance tasks, blacktopping driveways, repairing potholes; or drainage works, culverts, catch basins, watercourses; and/or a variety of other works. The Assistant Foreman - Roads and Drainage investigates public complaints and initiates remedial action; maintains effective public relations with the community; ensures the safety of work crews and the public by advising and enforcing observance of accident prevention methods and precautions. Motivates, allocates and disciplines employees in the crews; estimates costs, requisitions materials and allocates resources as required to complete the work within schedule and budget; and prepares time sheets and elementary reports. Performs related work as required.Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 plus sound related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the work; and of the hazards and safety precautions related to work. Ability to assign, coordinate, schedule, inspect, supervise and review the work of subordinate crews; direct the operation of heavy equipment including trucks, loaders, backhoe diggers, cranes, and compactors; read sketches, plans and diagrams and to prepare and maintain a variety of records using computer applications. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts; estimate and allocate labour, material and equipment costs for routine work. Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work.
