Sturgeon Public School Division is seeking a Full-Time, First Nations Cultural Liaison that plays a pivotal role in promoting cultural understanding and providing support to First Nations students, families, and staff within the K-12 public education system. This position serves as a bridge between the education system and First Nations communities, ensuring culturally responsive practices and fostering a supportive environment for all stakeholders.<p>Cultural Connections: <p><p> <p> Collaborate with teachers and leaders to integrate culturally relevant content into learning activities.<p> <p><p><p> <p> Provide guidance and support in connecting to appropriate community members, knowledge keepers, and Elders to share knowledge and perspectives.<p> <p><p><p> <p> Provide consultation and guidance to educators with regard to appropriate First Nations protocols<p> <p><p><p> <p> Organize cultural events and presentations to enhance cultural awareness among students, staff, and the broader community (Including National Indigenous Peoples Day).<p> <p><p><p> <p> Coordinate collaborative projects and initiatives that promote cultural exchange and community engagement.<p> <p> <p><p>Student Support: <p><p> <p> Provide individualized support to Indigenous students to address academic, social, and emotional needs (by referral).<p> <p><p><p> <p> Facilitate student cultural and leadership activities and mentorship programs designed to empower Indigenous students <p> <p><p><p> <p> Advocate for the inclusion of, and provide culturally sensitive counseling and mental health services within the school system.<p> <p> <p><p>Family Engagement: <p><p> <p> Serve as a liaison between Indigenous families and the school system, facilitating communication and collaboration.<p> <p><p><p> <p> Organize family nights and support Indigenous Parent Advisory Group meetings to build relationships and improve opportunities to involve parents in their children's education<p> <p><p><p> <p> Offer assistance with navigating school policies, advocating for students' needs, and connecting families with relevant resources.<p> <p><p><p> <p> Provide resources and referrals to support families in navigating the education system and accessing relevant services.<p> <p><p>Qualifications: <p><p> Lived experience and strong knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.<p> Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.<p> Experience working in education or community outreach, preferably within a First Nations context.<p> Demonstrated ability to develop and implement culturally responsive programs and initiatives.<p> Commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in education.<p> Must have own reliable transportation.<p> The ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.<p><p>Education: <p><p> A bachelor's degree in education, Indigenous studies, social work, or a related field is preferred. <p> Equivalencies may be considered. <p> <p> Additional knowledge or training in cultural competency or counseling is an asset. <p> Lived cultural experience is of paramount importance. <p><p>The First Nations Cultural Liaison plays a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness, supporting student success, and building strong partnerships between First Nations communities and the K-12 public education system.
