The Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre (NFC) is a not-for-profit, culture and community-based organization mandated to serve the needs of urban Indigenous people in the City of Peterborough and surrounding area. The NFC is currently accepting applications for a full-time position as our Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin Program Coordinator
NFC is an inclusive organization, encouraging applications from qualified candidates, including persons with disabilities, and members of visible minorities. The position is open to qualified candidates although preference will be given to candidates with Indigenous ancestry (please self-identify in your application).
Objectives:
To engage and support Indigenous men and male youth committed to ending all forms of violence perpetrated against Indigenous women and girls.
Responsibilities:
The Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin Program Coordinator will ensure all aspects of the Kizhaay Anishnaabe Niin program are planned, coordinated, delivered, maintained, and evaluated. In addition, will practice and role model cultural competency and cultural safety using a trauma-informed wholistic approach within the broader community
* Conduct initial intake assessments to determine the types of supports required
* Provide one-to-one and participant-based support services includes creating action plans
* Facilitate programming within correctional institutions and the provision of reintegration support for men and youth-aged males involved within various stages of criminal justice system involvement
* Educate men and youth-aged males in approaches to identifying and addressing their own abusive behaviours and implement alternative approaches to conflict resolution
* Encourage healthy violence free lifestyles through the provision of educational supports and the establishment of a supportive learning environment
* Coordinate local community events to promote Indigenous men?s roles in ending violence against Indigenous women and girls
* Create opportunities for Indigenous men and youth-aged males to engage with Elders, Traditional people, cultural and land-based activities
* Refer participants to appropriate counselling and treatment services in instances where mental illness and substance use are identified as issues of concern by the participant
* Promote healing circles, peer support networks and self-help processes to assist in men?s healing, positive identity development, learning alternative approaches to child discipline and Indigenous-specific intimate partner conflict resolution strategies
* Provide alternative options to institutional involvement through collaboration with Ontario Court of Justice administration, Probation and Parole Offices, and Correctional Institutions
Qualifications:
* A combination of education and work-related experience will be considered
* Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, social work, or related field.
* Minimum 3 years of related work experience within an Indigenous community.
* Strong knowledge of Indigenous culture and history, (The Seven Grandfather Teachings).
* Knowledge of working with the justice system, probation, and parole systems
* Understanding of Indigenous youth engagement models of practice, community engagement methodology, even coordination and program facilitation approaches
* Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, and trouble-shooting skills
* Experience in building and maintaining positive working relationships with local organizations/institutions to foster collaborative and coordinated approaches to achieving program objectives
* Proficiency in MS Office applications; good organizational and administrative skills
* Ability to work within the established policies and procedures of the NFC organization with the ability to work independently and as a team player, with minimal supervision
* Must have a valid driver?s license, a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel when required
* Must possess current First Aid / CPR certification or be willin
