?The peer support worker will have lived experience of a mental health challenge or illness [?] (MHCC, ?Guidelines for the Practice and Training of Peer Support,? p.5). Lived experience in this context is defined as personal experience of mental health challenges or illness, or prolonged emotional or psychological distress. The notion of a ?peer? is that of someone who has achieved a level of progress/success in their recovery, and are able to use their lived experience to inform their support of others. Additionally, though we are not primarily funded as a substance use health organization, we know that substance use and mental health are often intertwined, and this is reflected in both our workforce and service user population. This experience is especially valuable for candidates applying for vacancies in the Addictions Medicine Unit.

*Peer Support Worker Job Description*
NISA is a peer-led organization tasked with providing mental health recovery services in Sudbury, Ontario. All staff self-identify as having had some lived experience of mental health challenges and are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of their peers. We?ve been operating in Sudbury since 1998 with the motto _Being, Belonging, Becoming_. In our programs, peers can *be* who they are without judgement or discrimination; they take part in a community of peers in a space where they *belong*; and our aim is to foster recovery and personal growth so that individuals can define and *become* who they want to be. We acknowledge the value and expertise that comes from personal lived experiences, and stive to provide a space free of discrimination, stigma, and exclusion in all forms.
Our Leadership Team focuses on supporting NISA?s core values and culture, as well as accountability, dedication to ensuring quality services, providing supportive supervision, and advocating for peer voices in the mental health sector. Specifically, supportive supervision is based on mutual respect, strength-based, commitment to ongoing learning, self-awareness, integrity, effective communication, trusting relationships/transparency, autonomy with accountability, and personal growth.
The Peer Support Worker is responsible for delivering peer support and recovery services to NISA members. The Peer Support Worker will provide one-to-one support, as well as prepare and deliver group-based programming at our brick-and-mortar location, in the larger community, or at partnering organizations like HSN or CMHA. As the front-line of NISA, peer workers are also responsible for acting in accordance with the core values of peer support, of modelling recovery oriented and trauma informed practices, and for reenforcing the code of conduct among NISA membership.
